In the studio: new house project in Portland, Oregon

Portland House

We have been engaged on the design of a new house in Portland, Oregon by returning clients who have relocated to that city.  The project includes an ADU, an accessory dwelling unit, which is located to the front of the structure.  The family's portion of the house is toward the rear of the property and surrounds the garden.

Much of the design effort has been to craft a project that is explicityly modern and light and open while respecting the size and scale of the smaller, eclectic houses on the block.  To that end, we have detailed much of the front of the building using smaller scaled elements, like the sliding privacy shutters, to relate to the smaller wood details of the adjacent houses.
